"Image Rights - Manage Them or Lose Them"
The challenge that images with badly managed rights may result in unprotected work will be discussed at the seventh IPTC Photo Metadata Conference which will be held on 13 June in Barcelona (Spain). Speakers from all over Europe will debate changes in rights handling in the picture industry and will address latest technology for machine readable rights. How can technology help assert and protect the rights of content creators? Representatives from publishers, news agencies, photographers trade associations, law firms and standards bodies gave a pragmatic answer to this question at a one-day conference organized by the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) on March 12, 2013 in Amsterdam.

IPTC study: some social media networks remove rights data from photos
Digital cameras capture a lot of information beside images, including picture dimensions, pixel count or date stamp. And even basic photo editing software allows photographers to embed copyright information and other data. But you wouldn't know that from looking at pictures on many social media sites or after downloading them. According to a study by the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC), major social networks like Facebook, Twitter or Flickr remove copyright information and other useful embedded data from pictures posted by their users.

Relationships drive improvements in news content and delivery
There was a time when newsroom expertise in relationships was confined to the agony aunt. Now, relationships – in the wider sense of linkages among newsmakers, news subjects and events – are the foundation for more efficient and effective news delivery. The change adds a richer level of context -- a “semantic” layer of relationships -- to the descriptive tags on news content.

Sports standards bodies compete for converts
Healthy competition in sports is spreading beyond the field of play, as two rival standards for reporting sports results seek to win supporters in this Olympic year. One of them, SportsML, has been developed by the IPTC, the other one, the Olympic Data Feed (ODF), is championed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

New RightsML standard to express news usage rights enters trial phase
A new standard to express usage rights for news and online content in machine-readable format is ready for testing to demonstrate how it can improve publishing efficiency, the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) said Thursday, 26 April 2012. The IPTC is inviting news providers and publishers to participate in the Experimental Phase for its RightsML 1.0 standard. rNews goes live on New York Times site
The New York Times made a subtle change to the articles published on nytimes.com. They rolled out phase one of their implementation of rNews, the IPTC standard for metadata in web pages. G2 Scheme Browser for NewsCodes available
The IPTC G2 Scheme Browser is a Java software for downloading and locally viewing and managing the IPTC NewsCodes. You can download the software and use it for free.
The package includes the Java software plus XSLTs for transforming the NewsCodes vocabularies into widely used formats like CSV and RDF (XML and Turtle).

IPTC NewsCodes in Semantic Web formats
To better integrate with the Semantic Web in general and with Linked Data in particular the IPTC NewsCodes vocabularies are available in RDF/XML and RDF/Turtle format now, both use W3C's SKOS to organise the concepts. See how IPTC NewsCodes in these formats can be retrieved.
